Global Grooves - Gamelan and Taiko Project
This term we are going to be working in partnership with The National Centre of Early Music (NCEM), Humber Taiko and the University of York's Gamelan Sekar Petak on Global Grooves - a collaborative project to help young people be more creative and improve musical group work. Eleven young people aged 8-11 , who all come to our provisions, will come together to explore Japanese Taiko drumming (with Humber Taiko's Lisa Oliver and Emma Middleton) and Javenese bronze gamelan percussion (with community musician Emily Crossland and students from the University of York's Gamelan Sekar Petak ensemble). This six week course will see the participants perform and compose the music in their own ensemble, culminating in a high-profile concert series at the University of York gamelan gig. The young musicians will also have chance to experience high-calibre performances from advanced student gamelan groups and professional taiko musicians. There will be discounted tickets available for friends and families, so that they may share in the celebration of their young people's achievements.
